MIGRATION magic
It’s the noise that alerts me first: a distant honking that seems to build from a singular rhythmic note into a cacophony of noise as the geese skim over the house. Their reed-like calls, mixed with the heavy whump-whump of wing beats. The sky almost seems to darken as they circle above on mass, looking for the perfect grazing spot. Who knows how they choose their next picnic spot? Initially, one or two set down their landing gear and settled. This is like a beacon for all other geese from miles around, and the gathering grows. Safety in numbers whilst on the ground offers the opportunity to refuel.
Without fail, for twelve years, I have found myself dashing outside to experience this spectacle as it passes overhead. Whilst the neighbouring farmers curse them for raising their grass fields to the ground, I embrace their arrival into our neighbourhood as a unique and beautiful occurrence of nature. In previous years, their timing denoted the changing of seasons, but sadly, more recently, they seem to have lost their cyclic rhythm, something we note with concern.
Over the last two years, I have honed my ICM skills to capture the images in this album, finding the sweet spot between the camera movement I make and that of the birds. These images aim to capture the beauty, energy and organised chaos of this unique event.
